Baltimore Physics Tutor / Baltimore Math Tutor

If you are looking for a Baltimore physics tutor or a Baltimore math tutor, or if you’re interested in online instruction, you’ve come to the right place!  My name is Mike Specian, Ph.D. and I have been a private educator in various capacities for over a decade.  Some of my teaching experience includes:

  • Instructor at Boston University from 2001-2004
  • Teaching assistant at Johns Hopkins University in both laboratory and general physics classes
  • Certified Princeton Review MCAT physics instructor
  • Astronomy instructor for Center for Talented Youth (CTY)
  • Private tutor for nearly a decade

To discover whether my services may be of use to you, please email me at tutorinbaltimore@gmail.com or call (410) 914-7732.  I understand that hiring a new tutor can be something of a crapshoot, so I have included some sample instructional videos at the bottom of the page to help provide a sense of who I am.

My tutoring services are designed for students of all levels inluding those in grade school, high school, and college. I have taught to some of the more popular standardized exams like the SAT, AP subject tests, GRE and MCAT. I have also worked with professionals as they attempt to build new understanding or fill in gaps in their knowledge.  My specialty areas include:

  • Classical Mechanics
  • Electricity & Magnetism
  • Optics
  • Quantum Mechanics
  • Statistical Mechanics and Thermodynamics
  • Astronomy & Astrophysics
  • Elementary Math
  • Algebra
  • Trigonometry
  • Geometry
  • Vector Mathematics
  • Multivariable Calculus
  • Linear Algebra
  • Statistics
  • MATLAB
  • AP Exams
  • PSAT
  • SAT
  • GRE
  • ACT
  • GED
  • Competitive Debate

My teaching technique provides each student with independent attention and an individualized rubric based upon specific needs. Utilizing a combination of textbooks, problem sets and prior examinations, I employ pedagogical techniques that have been refined through years of education research not only to ensure that students answer problems correctly, but also to guarantee enduring qualitative understanding.  A typical session with me combines lecturing to introduce the main concepts, followed by a period of directed inquiry to help students directly engage with the material.

GROUP TUTORING POSSIBILITIES: I have experienced great success in employing group tutoring. Each additional student reduces the per hour rate, and friends often choose to work together in this environment on problem sets and test preparation. Frequently, useful questions and discussions are created by one student that another might not have thought of.

I find it most valuable to discuss teaching opportunities and rates on a case-by-case basis.  My schedule is extremely flexible, and by working with me directly you can cut out the middleman, i.e. tutoring services and marketplaces that love to charge a premium.  So if you are looking for a Baltimore physics tutor or a Baltimore math tutor, I encourage you to contact me directly by email at tutorinbaltimore@gmail.com or call (410) 914-7732.  I also offer online instruction for those who prefer to work remotely.  For a more detailed look at my experience, I invite you to peruse my curriculum vitae.  Cheers!

I found that Mike is both enthusiastic and incredibly knowledgeable. I began to learn not just what was covered in class, but the principles and theories behind these topics. Mike has the rare ability to break complicated things down and explain them in a way that any student with a basic knowledge of science can understand. After my first semester of physics, I had a much better understanding of the material and because of this, I was able to get an A in my physics course that semester. Due to my success in that class I continued to use Mike as a tutor. Mike tutored me for roughly 1.5 years and did so through a variety of topics. He has the ability to tutor over Skype, which was a tremendous help during the years I was at the University of Maryland College Park. I feel that much of my success through my scholastic career is due to Mike’s tutoring and his ability to clearly explain those tough to understand topics. I have since gone on to graduate from the University of Maryland as a Civil Engineer.

Mike is a wonderful physics tutor. I met with him a few times while I was taking General Physics I for Engineers. I was truly struggling and was looking for a tutor and I am so glad Mike showed up as one of the top hits. He really broke down every concept to its bare minimum. In the end, the foundation is the most important part of physics and he really helped me comprehend that. He showed me the most effective ways to study and do my homework. Physics is unlike any class I have ever taken (truly one of the hardest) and after every session with Mike, I would feel much better about the material. He is also a very charismatic and kind person who genuinely wants you to learn and enjoy the material.

We appreciate all of the work that Mike provided to our son when he was a junior in high school.  Our son was struggling in physics. Mike’s tutoring substantially improved his understanding of the material and this resulted in a dramatic improvement of his grade. Moreover, we thought that Mike connected with our son and we know he enjoyed working with him.

Mary Pat DiBiagio

My son was tutored by Mike in AP physics and he earned an A in AP physics class, got a 5 on his AP physics exam and got an extremely high score on his physics SAT II test. I highly recommend that every physics student enlist Mike’s help. He is amazing. He is extremely knowledgeable and was very thorough in his explanations, ensuring that my son knew the information thoroughly.
